I spent over $3k on a gearbox,
1. First time around I got a shift kit, $1600 later semi happy
2. Then I went back and asked for a stall converter, 3000 rpm, more $$$
3. liked the firm shift and wanted to control the gears,so went back again and they manualised it so I could change gears when I wanted (very cool)
4. Bought a B&M shifter after they made 'tokyo drift' as it looked awesome seeing the ratchet being pulled back, wanted to do it myself as the vs shifter was a bit crud
I sold the wagon 9 months later when I found the vt for literally what I spent on the box. It was okay (the auto), but I had ppl in my ear saying the auto would be better than any manual at the time, just young and niave I guess. The vs had stuff all power mods so it was a bit of a waste behind the ecotec. I love my manuals and believe the vt is twice the car on a bad day than the vs ever was.
I'd happily recommend a shift kitting ur auto and a stall converter, they do make them better, Holmart sell brand new getrag boxes for the vt's for $2.5K, u could find a wreck and buy all the other parts and have a manual vt for $4k on an expensive day really. $3k would cover a conversion quite easily. dbwgn converted his car to a manual and loved it. So put it simply, u can spend $2500 on getting ur auto going better, or for a lil extra u can have a manual. Remember u got rockers and most mods you will do to the ecotec will be felt above 3500 rpm, which is where an auto box is not the best.
Auto = low end
Manual = top end
