GearBox Noise?/ New gearbox option's

Postby OShea » Fri Jul 30, 2010 8:58 pm

Ok here is my question,
1) my gearbox makes a clunking noise when i change from park to reverse and vice versa and if i give it a boot then back off it clunks when dropping back a gear, Any idea what this could be? I have the right oil and amount in there.

2) I'm thinking about taking it in to get looked at as i have 12 months warranty on the car but if i was to get a new gearbox which would be the best to get (auto), I plan on doing alot of engine mods in the future and i'm instaling a LSD so something strong.

Cheers

Mick

could be as simple as a really worn uni joint on the tailshaft. My mates hq trimatic just had that problem, even when he went from reverse to drive coz of the change in direction of the tail shaft it would sort of rotate before it started to move the diff if that make sence.

if not could be something not right in your gearbox. just drop into an auto workshop and see if they can check it out for you.

Cheers mate, Yeah now you say that the uni joint does make sence, just that 5 or so mm pre-spin does really sound like the problem, I'm going to just put it in nutral and get under and see if there is some play, If not i'll take it down through the week.

Anyone know what a good Auto gearbox is for the ecotec's??

Mick, the 4l60E is the gearbox you have. you will find that there are a LOT of very fast/ high hp LS1's running these beefed up. sometimes they go for the 4L80E, but stick with what u have just stiffen it up TBH

Unless you have an interest in going manual? ...... :) If you think you v6 woke up with the mods you have done, manual is 2 steps ahead

Not that I'm biased or anything :)

good shift kit + 3000 rpm stall converter =$2500

My previous vs had a manualised, shift kitted auto, same box as urs. Went silly as it was cheaper than a conversion. Wouldnt go that far again though

I spent over $3k on a gearbox, :oops:

1. First time around I got a shift kit, $1600 later semi happy
2. Then I went back and asked for a stall converter, 3000 rpm, more $$$
3. liked the firm shift and wanted to control the gears,so went back again and they manualised it so I could change gears when I wanted (very cool)
4. Bought a B&M shifter after they made 'tokyo drift' as it looked awesome seeing the ratchet being pulled back, wanted to do it myself as the vs shifter was a bit crud :naughtyda:

I sold the wagon 9 months later when I found the vt for literally what I spent on the box. It was okay (the auto), but I had ppl in my ear saying the auto would be better than any manual at the time, just young and niave I guess. The vs had stuff all power mods so it was a bit of a waste behind the ecotec. I love my manuals and believe the vt is twice the car on a bad day than the vs ever was.

I'd happily recommend a shift kitting ur auto and a stall converter, they do make them better, Holmart sell brand new getrag boxes for the vt's for $2.5K, u could find a wreck and buy all the other parts and have a manual vt for $4k on an expensive day really. $3k would cover a conversion quite easily. dbwgn converted his car to a manual and loved it. So put it simply, u can spend $2500 on getting ur auto going better, or for a lil extra u can have a manual. Remember u got rockers and most mods you will do to the ecotec will be felt above 3500 rpm, which is where an auto box is not the best.

Auto = low end
Manual = top end

My thorts at least

Or you could do what i did.. :P change over the box and motor from a s/c VT and have a stronger motor, then just get it tuned and harden up the shift points in it if you want more kick from the changes :P I've had the motor/box in mine for almost a year now, if not over, and it's been perfectly fine... just make sure you have a BIG auto oil cooler on the front... helps heaps!

And another idea, Damn my head hurts now. So many things to consider, so many choices. Time to do some study on pro's and con's. :smt023
